Colic.  Dun, dun DUN!!  Are you and your child a victim of colic?  Do you have someone in your life that is suffering from it?  While there may not be a defining cure for it, if you are in it, the next several weeks could feel like lifetimes.  With hot needles are being stabbed in your ears.

But, there are a few key things to help you survive it.

Top 5 Must Haves For Surviving Colic

5 – Earplugs: Don’t accept the guilt on this.  Most earplugs won’t completely take away the cries; it will only dull it a bit.  And anything that will take the edge off the hours of inconsolable crying is completely worthwhile.

4 – Calming scent: Whether its a candle, diffuser, perfume or essential oil roller ball you’ll slather your face in it, if there’s a scent that calms you (like lavender does for me) pour it over your head.  Shower in it.  Breath in the calmness it gives you.  This is a pure survival play that you need to make the most of.  Don’t know a scent that works for you?  Check out this list from Huffington Post.

3 – Tiara:  This may feel ridiculous out in public, but I bet you can own it.  Get yourself a tiara to remind yourself of the awesome Queen Mother you are.  Because you are, and the weight of the tiara on your head won’t let you forget it.

2 – Mobility device: Some way of being mobile with your screaming baby, because if you think keeping the screams all to yourself for the duration is the answer, I disagree.  If its a baby carrier to walk your streets, a stroller, a car, an infant seat in a bike, a chariot with hot men to carry you both – get it.  Get out.  Share the screams with the world!  You’ll then also have witnesses if you end up in the loony boon.

1 – Ear buds, connected to a device: This is for when the ear plugs aren’t in your ear.  One of the best ways I was able to “deal” with some of the toughest parenting moments (including colic) was when I was almost able to go inside myself and shut out the crying.  I would call it my inner mom zen.  I’m not a frequent meditator, but I’ve really appreciated some of the free meditations on youtube to help me sleep or find my calm.  Check this one out, with ear buds, while trying to get through some of the hours of crying.  It might help you recenter yourself.  And if not, at least it helps block the noise.

I bet you thought I was going to say alcohol.  I considered it, but really, if you are breastfeeding, especially at this point, there’s barely a chance to get a drink in.  Even if you aren’t, your tolerance is likely so low from not drinking over the course of your pregnancy that after one drink you are just as likely to lose your shit as you are to keep it.  So for this one brief top 5 list, we don’t advocate alcohol.  Don’t worry, it’ll come back in your lives soon!
